MARCUS PARRETT - 10 YEARS A SAINT

Marcus Parrett made Sovereign Saints history this afternoon by becoming the first player that has ever played in 10 consecutive seasons for the Club. Marcus joined the Club as a 4 year old and commenced playing as an U7 in the 2007/08 season. He has gone on to represent the Club at every age since up until last years U15s. Unfortunately with the Club unable to put out an U16 team this season he has been “on loan” Eastbourne Borough, for whom this morning he played in their final game. With Saints U18s playing in a different league he had been registered also to play for them too, and so after the Borough game he travelled back to Eastbourne to join up with the team and take his place on the bench for the second half of their game against Pink Flamingos. And not only did his being brought on complete that unique record, but he proceeded to go and score the winner in a 2-1 victory that was a 5th in a row for the U18s.

EPIC WINS FOR U15s AND U18s TODAY

The U15s (pictured) went into today’s final game of the season against Chailey & Newick in 4th place, just a point behind 3rd placed Eastbourne Town, who by some irony were also playing their last game of the season against Newhaven on the adjacent pitch at the Sports Park. Saints did what they needed to do as goals from Ersi Losaj and Jake Hulkes secured a 2-1 win, with thanks going to Newhaven who overcame Town by the same score thus propelling Saints to a best ever league finish of 3rd.

Meanwhile the U18s traveled to league leaders Maidenbower Utd and after taking the lead through an early Liam Montgomery goal matched their host all the way and came back with all 3 points. Incredibly Maidenbower have only lost 3 times all season, and two of those defeats have been to Saints.

Only the U18s and Mens have games remaining, although there may yet be some friendlies arranged - and then on to the Tournaments starting late April.

TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

Good wins today for the oldest Teams in the Club. The U14s overcame higher league opposition Hollingbury Hawks 2-0 in the Challenge Trophy, the U15s defeated Patcham Utd 4-2 thanks to a Sean Murray hat-trick and a rare Sammy Tolhurst goal, and the U18s sent Crawley Town home pointless after a 3-0 win.

Meanwhile the best of results for the younger teams included two wins over Polegate Grasshoppers for the U8s, one win and one loss for the U10 against Select Youth, and yesterday the U9Rs got a pair of wins against Polegate Grasshoppers.

TEAM PHOTO SHOOTS

A really successful morning of Team photos yesterday, and you will see the results on various pages of the website.

Next Saturday the Teams we didn’t manage to do yesterday.

So as not to show favoritism to any one team, the picture on the left is one of Team Chairman.

U14s GRAB LAST GASP WINNER IN THRILLER AT WITHDEAN

The U14s whose league season only has one game left have are playing some games in a Challenge Trophy Competition, and after the agony of conceding a last minute goal to lose to higher league opposition last week, this week were winners with a late goal in a thriller on the 3G away at Withdean. The home side had just equalised at 4-4 but Saints Jack Scarbrow then scored direct the restart to complete a hat-trick and seal a 5-4 win (other two goals were from Dominic Sharpe).

The rest of the results included two good wins for the U8s at Eastbourne Borough, also on 3G surface, 4 games for the U9Ys in a round robin of games with Seaford Town and Peacehaven, a win and defeat in a strong performance by the U9Bs at Pevensey & Westham. And finally, also at Pevensey and Westham, the U10s secured a 1-1 draw and a 2-1 win, the win thanks to a late penalty save from Harry Howes.

ANOTHER COLLECTION OF DECENT RESULTS

Every team bar the U7s in action this weekend, and of note today is what improvements all of the team managers are reporting in their teams performances compared with earlier in the season. Amongst the younger teams the highlights included two wins for both the U8s and U9Ys, one win against a very strong Westfield team for the U9Bs, a win for the U9Rs and a draw and a narrow 3-4 defeat for the U10s against a Ratton Rangers side who had won by some margin against them earlier in the season. Amongst the older teams a similar story for the U14s who in their Challenge Trophy competition conceded a last minute winner to Hollingbury Hawks - a team that had put 11 past Saints in the first game of the season. Both U12 teams went down gallantly in defeat, as did the U15s, whilst the U18s returned from Pink Flamingos (Hassocks) with a 3-2 win.

MENS TEAM CROWNED CHAMPIONS

Following hot on the heels of winning through to the Eastbourne Vice Presidents Cup Final last weekend, the Mens Team today secured the ESFL Division 4 title with 3 games to spare. Saints dominated the game against second placed JC Tackleway, but in very windy conditions found their defence hard to break down, but second half goals from George Sambrook and David Wisdom ultimately got them the result.

THIS WEEKEND’S ROUNDUP

Not games for all teams this weekend, but there were games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pick of the results being the U7s with two wins against Eastbourne Borough, 5 goals there for Leo Yarnton, and a well earned 1-0 win, also against Borough, for the U12Bs. Also of note was the U10s getting themselves prepared for next season’s 9v9 football (bigger goals, bigger pitches and offside included) with a practice match against the U12Ys.

And the great news from the Men’s Team is that they have a Cup Final to look forward to as they defeated Hailsham Athletico 6-1 in the Eastbourne Vice Presidents Cup Semi-Final, George Sambrook starring with 4 goals.

The Vets Team didn’t fare so well this week, losing 6-1 to Polegate Town, but we are pleased to report that in addition to another performance from Martin Cavie, Club coaches Brian Isted (U10) and Richard Porter (MKs) also played this week.
